Diving Into a New Swim Year

By Aria Jochnau

Do you love to be in the water all the time? If so, joining the Pin Oak Swim Team is the perfect opportunity for you! Students that are interested in being a part of the team can attend an interest meeting on October 19 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. or 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the C House computer lab. At the meeting, topics will be discussed such as the application process, tryout schedule, practice schedule (we practice at both Pershing Middle School and Lamar High School since Pin Oak has no pool), as well as the meet schedule, including Districts. As of right now, there is no team size limit, but in order to qualify, you must be able to swim freestyle. The coach of the seventh and eighth grade boys’ team is Coach Johnson, who has coached the swim team for five years. It is Coach Coffman – Fujiwara’s third year coaching the seventh and eighth grade girls’ team.

Unlike past years, Pin Oak will compete in District Zone 2 instead of District Zone 1 due to the success the team has had in the last years. The competition will definitely be tougher, but there is no doubt that the Pin Oak swim team will be up for the challenge. Coach Coffman – Fujiwara stated, “Our goal each year is for each individual swimmer to improve their times from the start of the season to the end of the season. We are especially proud of the academic achievements of our swimmers. We have a great reputation for working hard in the pool, in the classroom, and in the community. We love to see the Charger Pride they bring to practice and our meets. Coach Johnson and I are both very honored to be involved with such a great group of Pin Oak Chargers!”
