Many students here at Pin Oak have heard about the UIL Squad (University Interscholastic League), but some are unaware of what it truly is. The UIL Squad is a group of students that show their academic skills by competing in events , which they can win individual and team awards. The academic events include Science, Social Studies, Art, Musical Memory, Calculator Applications, Editorial Writing, Maps, Graphs and Charts, and Dictionary Skills. The tournaments are day-long events, with five sections (9:00 am, 10:15 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 am, and 2:00 pm).
Mr. Dabbs, the UIL coach, commented, “We setup our ‘camp’ at 8:45 in the school’s cafeteria, and the students will report to the assigned competition room and will either take a timed test related to the subject or will perform their speech event.”
So far, their first tournament was at Paul Revere Middle School, and they won second place. They have an upcoming tournament at Yates High School on Saturday, January 9, 2017.
