In light of the current election results, many are asking: “celebrity politicians, really?” Despite this not being commonplace, there are have been many celebrity politicians over the years.
Some of the most well known politicians were previously celebrities, for instance, the B-list actor Ronald Reagan. Reagan acted in a variety of movies, from the 1951 comedy Bedtime for Bonzo, to what critics consider his best work, the 1942 comedy Kings Row. He was elected as the 33rd Governor of California and served from 1967 to 1975, and was later elected by a landslide as the 40th President of the United States in 1980. He was re-elected as president in 1984, with all but 2 states against him.
Another popular B-list actor that became a political figure is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger has acted in some of the most popular action movies, such as all but one of the Terminator movies, and the original Predator movie. Schwarzenegger held office as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. Additionally, the popular spaghetti western actor and director Clint Eastwood, best known for his film, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, may not have had a significant political position, but he still held office as mayor of his home town, Carmel-by-the-sea.
And last, but definitely not least, President Donald Trump. President Trump won in an election that shocked many, and is the 45th President of the United States. Before entering politics, he was the host and one of the executive producers of the NBC reality show, The Apprentice.
