DARING TO DANCE
By Leah Mei Guttentag
Intermediate/Advanced Dance, a class offered for 7th and 8th graders, is a tryout only class. “This class is for the dancer who has previous experience and wants to be challenged! This class is also best for those studio dancers who do not have time to be a member of Company and Crew but want to be pushed at a more advanced level at Pin Oak MS,” Ms. Reilly explained. Tryouts occur at the end of the year and will be in the announcements and Charger Buzz.
Dancers interested should have,“higher technique and higher flexibility.” Ms. Reilly said she will evaluate skills such as: double pirouettes either right side or left side, right and left leaps, center leaps, and splits. “As long as the dancers show potential to be placed in an upper level dance class they should be just fine at the auditions! They do not have to have these listed skills perfected quite yet,” she said. At tryouts they will be required to wear all black and show the skills listed above as well as a small jazz combination.
“We’ve definitely learned how to perform show wise… in regular dance it’s focused on the technique because you’re starting from scratch but in int/adv dance you know the technique so it’s focused on facials and confidence and making sure the crowd is engaged in the show,” one member of the class, Lily Hurzy, commented.
Ms. Reilly encourages all dancers to at least try out. The class has lots of fun and she has seen improvement in all of her dancers in the class from the beginning of the year to now. If you are on the fence about trying out and you can’t decide whether or not to do it, go for it!
