Are you bored of staying at home for the holidays? Do you think there is nothing in your neighborhood you haven’t seen or done? You should get out of the house to make the most of your weeks out of school! Here are some suggestions for places to go and things to do over winter break.

Houston has a big museum district with many interesting exhibits, both permanent and travelling. Most museums have days where admittance is free. The Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Holocaust Museum, and the Health Museum, to name a few, are all free on Thursdays.

Also around the museum district, the Houston Zoo puts on a bright display every year. Zoo Lights is open over the winter vacation, after it gets dark. They have wonderful displays throughout the zoo.

Ice skating is a typical pastime in winter… where it actually gets cold. But in Houston we can go ice skating, too! In the Galleria, there is an indoor ice rink. It is there all year, but around the winter holidays, a giant Christmas tree is set up in the middle of the rink. You can rent ice-skates and skate around for as long as you want! There is also an outdoor ice rink at Discovery Green that set up on November 18, and will stay open until January 21. You can rent skates there too.

Moody Gardens has a beautiful Festival of Lights over the holidays, and it is something everyone should see sometime. It is a huge display of lights, holiday movies, and activities for all ages.

Of course, if you want to stay at home for the holidays, you can spend your time hanging decorations, or doing some DIYs! (The Pin Oak Press also has fun DIY suggestions for the holidays!)
