ARE WE LIVING IN A SIMULATION?

The theory that we are living in a simulation  originally comes from the Greeks but wasn’t really talked about until Swedish Philosopher, Nick Bostrom, released an article in 2003 proposing the idea that our world is a simulation. This conspiracy theory has come to light more recently due to the thoughts of Elon Musk. You may be asking “ Who is Elon Musk?” Elon Reeve Musk is a South African business man best known for founding Tesla Motors. He also founded PayPal and SpaceX.

The theory states that there is some sort of advanced civilization that can create a simulation. A simulation being the current world that we live in. Elon says there is a one in a billionth chance of this being real, noting that every year technology is getting more and more advanced. His example is that 40 years ago we had Pong, a game with two rectangles and a ball. Now we have much more advanced games like virtual reality. If our technology keeps advancing at the rate it is now, the games will so be real and close to the real world we won’t be able to tell what’s real or not. In fact, he says, we should actually hope that our world is simulation because if our civilization stops advancing it will probably be because of some sort of apocalypse So, according to Musk, we’ll either create our own simulation from our advanced technology or our civilization will seize to exist.

If in the future there is a game where we can’t tell the real world from a video game, then how do we know that didn’t happen in the past? For all we know we could be part of a game from the past and have lost track of what is real and what’s not. It’s a lot like that scene from the  movie The Matrix: “Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?”
